Samels Farm Facts

  • The Samels Family was the sole owner of the farm from 1895 to 2003.
  • It is a Centennial Farm of 82 acres.
  • It is in trust with The Archaeological Conservancy
  • The land was logged twice during the early 1800’s. First  by the Dexter and Noble Company,  and then by Edgar and Andrew Pray, who sold the land to Frank Samels.
  • The farms unusual topography reveals the old beach ridges of ancient lakes created over time after the glaciers retreated.
  • Artifacts collected by the family and the 1966-67 MSU/WMU dig, showed the land was inhabited by Native Americans from soon after the glacier's retreat to the present.
  • The farm itself was self -sustaining and is restored and shown as a 20th century farm.
